Essential Safety Rules for Operating Chain Saws

1. Preparation and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

Before even starting the engine, of a chainsaw, thorough preparation is non-negotiable. Always begin by inspecting your chainsaw: check the chain tension, ensure the chain brake is functioning, verify the oil and fuel levels, and confirm that all bolts and handles are secure. Crucially, never operate a chainsaw without the proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). This includes a hard hat or helmet (preferably with a face screen or goggles for eye protection), heavy-duty gloves, and snug-fitting clothing. Most importantly, wear cut-resistant chaps or pants and steel-toed boots to protect against chain strikes—the most common cause of severe chainsaw injuries. Planning your escape route and clearing the area of debris before starting is equally vital.

2. Safe Starting and Stable Operation

Chainsaws must always be started correctly to prevent dangerous kickbacks or loss of control. Place the saw on firm, level ground, ensuring the chain brake is engaged. Use a stable starting position, holding the front handle firmly with one hand while placing your foot through the rear handle or resting it securely on the ground. Once running, maintain a firm, two-handed grip on the saw with your thumbs wrapped fully around the handles. Always keep your feet securely planted and maintain a balanced stance. Never cut above shoulder height, as this compromises your control and places you directly in the path of a potential kickback, which is a violent, upward-and-backward thrust of the guide bar’s tip.

3. Kickback Avoidance and Maintenance

The most significant danger when operating a chainsaw is kickback, which occurs when the top quadrant of the guide bar nose strikes an object or gets pinched. To prevent this, avoid cutting with the tip of the bar and always ensure the lower part of the bar is used where the cutting force pulls the saw toward the wood, not away from it. Be wary of cutting dirty or damp wood and ensure the chain remains razor-sharp, as a dull chain requires excessive force and increases the likelihood of binding and kickback. Finally, after each use, clean the saw, check the chain and brake mechanism for wear, and store the machine safely with the chain brake engaged and the gas tank drained for long-term storage.
